The Wild Muse: Why Nature Inspires My Writing

Many people ask me, as a middle school author, why I enjoy writing about nature.” For me, the answer is simple yet profound. In my stories, nature is more than just a background, it’s a character, a muse, and a source of endless inspiration.

Living in the Northwoods of Minnesota, surrounded by towering pines, crystal-clear lakes, and abundant wildlife, it’s impossible not to be captivated by the beauty and wonder of the natural world. Every day, I am reminded of the importance of preserving and cherishing our natural spaces, and I strive to instill that appreciation in my readers.

Nature’s ability to surprise and delight us is truly magical. Take, for example, the bear that occasionally wanders onto our property. While some might see this as a cause for alarm, I see it as an opportunity for storytelling. The presence of this majestic creature reminds me of the wildness and unpredictability of nature, which often finds its way into my writing.

Nature has a central role in shaping both the story and characters of my debut novel, “Ember of the Woods.” The protagonist, a young girl named Ember, finds solace and strength in the surrounding wilderness, much like I do in my own life. Through her adventures, readers are transported to a world where nature is not just a setting but a living, breathing entity that influences every aspect of the narrative.

Writing about nature allows me to share my love and respect for the natural world with young readers, many of whom may not have the opportunity to experience it firsthand. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our environment for future generations.

So, the next time you pick up one of my books and find yourself immersed in a world of towering trees and whispering winds, remember that nature is not just a backdrop; it’s a living, breathing character that has the power to inspire, educate, and transform us all.

Keep watching for further details about my writing process, inspirations, and adventures in the Northwoods. Perhaps the bear will show up again, providing inspiration for the next phase of my writing journey.
